Hirnforschung und Meditation.
Ein Dialog.
Wolf Singer, Matthieu Ricard
edition unseld
Suhrkamp Verlag

tnnd!

DOLLAR! DOLLAR! DOLLAR!
I've been using this title 2 years ago, and I think today warrants the cry again.
The movement is just historical. It definately has taken the starch out of my stomach.
I have to say, there are many things in this world that I do not understand, and, probably never will...

(question mark here)

The death of a private banker
Alex Widmer, CEO of Julius Baer was found dead at home last Thursday, many sources claimed he committed suicide, some went to the detail that he hanged himself.

A woman
english patient 里K. 说
"a woman should never learn to sew, and if she does know how she shouldn't admit to it."
shall we amend that to
"a woman should never wish for a man, and if she does she shouldn't admit to it."

How he stuttered!
Was watching the news conference of Hank Paulson on his Economic Stabilization Act.
It was noticed in the past that he paused more frequently than necessary. But this became extreme today. He hardly finished one sentence without stammering.
Has he lost his nerves?
A journalist asked him whether he would leave the TARP to the next administration and said he was set upon the clock... That's one of the few occassions through the conference where he relaxed and uttered a full sentence without pausing, I am going to run right to the end, and if you’ve got any doubt about that, I tell you, you’re missing the point.

to buy or not to buy
that's the question.
i'm not talking about my own positions in the market.
I'm thinking about hank paulson's strategy. The market has finally lifted from the bottom (or one of the bottoms to be on the safe side) with the bank sector still bitterly battered. 20 bn loan and 306bn guarantee for citi alone is a very bold move. But this looks so inconsistent to me.
Paulson initially asked for 700 bn to buy bad assets under TARP, with some complication he got the money finally. It took him weeks to find asset managers while the market waiting impatiently for TARP to get kicked off, only to find out that Paulson has scratched the whole programme and came up with something else, i.e. to inject funds into the banks in return for preference shares.
It may not be that bad an idea, but the market is too nervous, too weak, too cracked up to take any surprise. So off it went south...
The rationale behind buying bank shares instead of bank assets is that the equity side of the balance sheet will increase hence improve the debt-equity ratio. Banks are left with more freedom to transfer this effect into more lending.
But, by giving up the original plan of buying bank assets, Paulson also gives up the only tool to stablise the market for cds and other mortgage related credit derivatives. The policy makers may well have calculated this factor in, but how sufficiently, and what disatrous effect would it have if the market really go to an unforseen extreme? Will the writing down of assets value in banks be so severe that they will refrain from lending even if the d/e ratio improved, say marginally?
The reaction last week was so pessimistic that The Economists called for a rethinking.
Just as all these unfold, the goverment rolled out the rescue plan for citi.
I really want to ask, wouldn't buying the toxic assets be more effective from the first place?
Paulson will depart from his position latest in Jan. when Obama takes office, he will have no replay button to make a different decision that's going to affect the global economy in such a scale.
History will be the only judge. And I wish he wouldn't have to eat his own words in humilation, as Greenspan already did.

how about a good poem?

Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before... He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way.
Kurt Vonnegut, "Cat's Cradle"
